When selecting wire mesh for a project, two of the most common options are stainless steel and galvanized wire mesh. Understanding their differences helps ensure the right choice for your application. Stainless steel wire mesh is made from chromium-alloyed steel, typically 304 or 316 grade. It offers excellent corrosion resistance without additional surface treatment, maintains strength at high temperatures, and has a long service life. It is ideal for chemical processing, marine environments, food processing, and architectural applications. Galvanized wire mesh is made from low-carbon steel coated with a layer of zinc through hot-dip or electro-galvanizing. The zinc coating provides sacrificial protection against rust. It is more cost-effective than stainless steel and suitable for fencing, animal enclosures, construction reinforcement, and general-purpose applications where extreme corrosion resistance is not required. Key considerations: stainless steel costs more upfront but requires less maintenance over time. Galvanized mesh is economical but the zinc coating will eventually wear through in harsh environments.
